This machinima created in Second Life, with a scripted eye object that shows where the avatar L1 is looking, plays with Soviet silent filmmaker Dziga Vertov's concept of "kino eye," which he enthusiastically described in his writings in the 1920s and realized in his masterpiece film, Man with a Movie Camera.

Bio(s): Lori Landay: Lori Landay, Associate Professor of Cultural Studies at Berklee College of Music is an interdisciplinary scholar and new media artist exploring the making of visual meaning in twentieth- and twenty-first-century culture. She is the author of two books, I Love Lucy and Madcaps, Screwballs, and Con Women: The Female Trickster in American Culture, and articles on topics including virtual worlds, digital narrative, silent film, and television culture. Her creative work includes animation, graphic design, creative documentary, machinima, interactive virtual art installations, and music video. She was awarded the Dean’s Award for Excellence in the Professional Education Division at Berklee College of Music, a Newbury Comics Faculty Fellowship for her sabbatical project "Virtual Worlds," a National Endowment for the Humanities Enduring Questions Grant for "What Is Being?" and consulted on and appeared in Finding Lucy, an American Masters documentary airing nationally on PBS and internationally. She participates in virtual worlds as an artist, teacher, and filmmaker with the avatar name L1Aura Loire in Second Life and L1 Loire in OpenSim grids.  She is a member of the steering committee of the Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) in Second Life.
